Precise Sound Decibel (dB) Addition Calculator
Thumb Rule to add Decibel values : Simplified
Addition of decibel (dB) is done based upon the difference of two sound pressure levels to be added. Here is the thumb rule for decibel addition
If the difference is 0 to 1 : Add 3 with the larger decibel value
For example
95db+95db=98db
95db+96db=99db
If the difference is between 2-3 : Add 2 with the larger value
For example
85db+87db=89db
86db+89db=91db
And if it is 4-9 : Add 1 with the larger value
For example
80db+85db=86db
10 and more than 10: Just take the larger decibel value
For example
80db+91db=91db
In fact the values which are being added with the larger decibel value is not the exact value, but this will help while calculating the approximate resultant of two sound pressure levels.
This method is a practical approximation for quickly estimating the combined level of two sounds without performing the exact logarithmic calculations required for precise dB addition. It’s important to note that this approach gives a rough estimate rather than an exact value, which is useful in many practical scenarios but may not be suitable for applications requiring high precision.
